Aberdeen Christmas Tree switch-on Castlegate, Thursday 24 November, 7pm – Aberdeen’s Christmas tree is a little bit special. Donated by the Granite City’s twin town of Stavanger it’s a regular and hugely appreciated gift. A short carol service will be held at the Castlegate before the Lord Provost of Aberdeen and the Deputy Mayor of Stavanger Bjørg Tysdal Moe illuminate the spruce.
Aberdeen Lighting of Marischal College Broad Street, Thursday 24 November 2016, time tbc – See the UK’s largest granite building illuminated for the winter in traditional festive colours.
Aberdeen Christmas Lights Switch On Parade Union Street, Sunday 27 November 2016, 5.30pm – This year’s festive parade is led by the Lord Provost down Union Street to the Castlegate. The theme is Snow and Ice so wrap up cosy.
Dundee Christmas Lights Switch-On City Centre, Dundee, Friday 18, 6.30pm – The end of the Festival of Architecture and the start of Dundee’s Christmas celebrations will dovetail into one bright evening. Called Night Lights, dazzling light installations will light up iconic buildings, a torchlight procession will take place and the Christmas Lights Switch On will take place in the City Square.
If the square is busy head to Slessor Gardens for some mulled wine and street food and watch live images beamed from the city square to a Big Screen in the gardens. [Night Lights continues into Saturday 19 November.]
Edinburgh Christmas Light Night George Street, Edinburgh, Sun 20 Nov, 1pm onwards – Join choirs from across Scotland for a tuneful start to the festive celebrations. Edinburgh Festival Chorus with Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra with their Junior Chorus and Edinburgh’s Got Soul will perform in front of an expected audience of around 20,000 people. The Christmas tree on the Mound, again a Scandinavian gift, this time from the Hordaland County Council in Norway to Auld Reekie, will light up the night sky.
Glasgow Christmas Lights Switch-On George Square, Sun 20 Nov – Tickets for this event were balloted so if you were one of the lucky ones then you’ll already know. If not perhaps look at a day trip to another sparkling Scottish city.
Inverness Christmas Lights Switch-On City Centre, Inverness, Sun 20 Nov, noon onwards – Join Santa, his reindeer and members of the cast of this year’s Eden Court Pantomime, Dick Whittington at 12 noon at Falcon Square. Children can meet the reindeer, enjoy live music, visit Santa in his Grotto, and check into the ‘Elf Makeover Station’ to create their own elf hat and get rosy cheeks painted red.
At 5pm congregate at Crown Primary School and join Santa and the Provost for a torchlight procession down Stephens Brae to the High Street. Marchers line up behind the City of Inverness Youth Pipe Band, with torches lit at 5.45pm. The parade will head for the High Street where the Christmas lights will be lit up as the procession passes by around 6pm culminating outside the Town House. Then head to the Old High Church for a Carol Service at 6.30pm.
Perth Christmas Lights Switch-On City Centre, Perth, Sat 19 Nov, noon onwards – Santa will arrive at 12pm meeting children and listening to their Christmas wishes until 5.30pm when he will take part in a Christmas parade through Perth City Centre. The route starts at Thimblerow car park at 5.30 pm, ending at Watergate. There’s an afternoon of entertainment planned before the lights are switched on at 6.15pm and the evening wraps up with a fireworks display across the River Tay. Celebrities attending include Professor Green, Slade, Fleur East and Basil Brush.
Stirling – Christmas Lights Switch On, King Street, Sunday 20th November 2pm onwards – Stirling’s celebrations start at 2pm with a Santa and Reindeer Parade which starts outside the Albert Halls before finishing at the new Castle Christmas grotto outside Boot’. Stars from the Macrobert panto Weans in the Wood will be in attendance as will DJs from Central FM. The lights will be illuminated at 5pm.
