Dumfries and Galloway with Kids – This region is really geared up with attractions especially aimed at wee ones. From chocolate and ice cream to Peter Pan and pirates, it was all going on. Here are the highlights – click through on each link to discover LOTS more detail. *Post contains affiliate links that I may make a few pennies from.
Stories & Adventure – Moat Brae, Dumfries
Scotland’s National Centre for Storytelling and Children’s Literature, Moat Brae is also the site where JM Barrie played as a child, inspiring him to write Peter Pan. Now the restored and transformed house is a centre of reading songs and pirate adventures. The fantastic Joanna Lumley is patron! Read more about it, and the wee outdoor playground, here.
Ice Cream & Outdoor Play – Cream o’Galloway, Castle Douglas
Ice cream tasting anyone? Extensive outdoor play, including the fantastically bouncy Boing!, as well as two indoor soft play areas. Get the lowdown here.
Chocolate Heaven – Cocoa Bean Factory, Twynholm
Chocolate lovers and mini goodies will adore the chocolate workshops at the Cocoa Bean Company. We’re also talking a vast soft play area, as well as a vast outdoor play area that features a pirate ship and a dinosaur!
Explosive History – The Devil’s Porridge Museum, Eastriggs
For military history, The Devil’s Porridge Museum commemorates HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War! Surprisingly engaging for kids, who get to mix their own cordite (on screen!) and pack a suitcase for a WW2 evacation.
Lush & Green – Threave Garden, Castle Douglas
We have just covered the tip of the iceberg in this region, and wish to return soon to highlight the other farms, play areas and attractions that make family travel in Dumfries and Galloway easy and fun.
