Glamping Moray at Macbeth’s Hillock, Forres – Review

Glamping Moray at Macbeth’s Hillock, Forres – This is a wonderful glamping site for two reasons. Firstly it’s SUPER cosy and SUPER comfortable. So if you think glamping isn’t for you, think again. The witch theme is there for a reason, it’s so atmospheric around the campfire, even for adults. I’ll explain why, but this place was a hit for us and I’d recommend it.

Pods & Facilities – Glamping Moray at Macbeth’s Hillock in Forres

These glamping pods, located in rural Brodie, Morayshire are kitted out with a double bed, a single bed, and a pull-out single bed with a proper mattress on it (no dodgy camp-beds) – that’s four glampers in one pod.

Secondly, rather than a wood-burning stove (which is a bit of a hazard for wee ones) that go out through the night and need relit in the morning, Macbeth’s Hillock pods have simple heaters. You can glamp here whatever the weather, whatever the time of year, turning the temperature up at the flick of a switch. It felt like cheating! A heater doesn’t bring the same character as a stove admittedly, but it’s glamping without the hard work and, as a busy parent, it felt so good!

There’s also a well-furnished kitchen area with hob – lots of utensil and pots and pans. Each pod has an en-suite toilet and shower with piping hot water, and a dining table. It is so civilised.

If you’ve forgotten anything, or wish to travel light, an honesty shop on site provides basic dry goods and supplies. (The Honesty Shop is currently closed due to Covid-19, but local amenities are a short drive away.)

Firepit at Macbeth’s Hillock

Does it still have a camping vibe? Yes. Each pod has an outdoor picnic table and its own fire pit and griddle maintaining the camping vibe, and allowing wee ones to toast marshmallows. With only five pods in total, it’s got that communal camping vibe and you can end up talking to your neighbours but, with only five pods, it’s never too busy. It’s a tranquil location where the kids can run free and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. Sitting in the darkness, huddled around a campfire is what camping and glamping is all about.

Location – Glamping Moray at Macbeth’s Hillock in Forres

If love history and whisky then discover things to do here. For a mix of family friendly options have a wee read here. The location is such a winner. The glamping site is located at Macbeth’s Hillock – this is the place where Shakespeare’s Macbeth is said to have met the three witches who prophesied Macbeth’s rise and fall. The grassy mound is fun by day – the kids ran up and down it like crazy miniature Grand Old Dukes of York, and you get surprisingly good views from the top of the hillock. But by night, it is wonderfully spooky – ideal campfire territory with tales of ghosts, ghouls and witches. Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble…

Lovely witch’s cat details at Macbeth’s Hillock

The pods look like witches’ houses. There are additional nice touches, like witches cats on the curtains and on the pillows. It’s a unique location, with its own story.

Macbeth’s Hillock is set in Moray farmland, and there are sheep grazing on the hillock, which is fenced off from the glamping site. The flock keep themselves to themselves, unless our kids were attempting to ‘get to know them’. I remember being told to avoid livestock when I was pregnant but, apart from that, the sheep were a peaceful addition to a rural scene and can’t stray onto the glampsite itself.

In terms of location, on the doorstep was Brodie Castle, Brodie Countryfare and a lovely restaurant called the Old Mill Inn. Visit Moray Speyside Tourism for an overview of the area.

This is a winning glampsite due to the facilities, the cosiness, the cultural backstory of Macbeth and the location. So get thee to Morayshire! Check out prices and availability here.
