Masseria Puglia – Farm stay with pool and Trulli accommodation near Alberobello

Masseria Puglia – Farm stay with pool and Trulli accommodation near Alberobello – As the title suggests this place has everything. A masseria is a farm stay or farm stead in Italy, and we found one set with the traditional conical ‘trulli’ accommodation. Plus the pool!

I’m simply writing it up because we loved it,plus it was very reasonably priced (around £100 a night for a family of 4 for B&B in a 2-bed apartment) when we visited in low season (October) yet we experienced 22-26 degree heat.

Summary of the Accommodation

Masseria Pentima Vetrana offers both apartments and trulli (traditional Puglian conical) accommodation. We opted for the 2-bedroom apartment which opens right onto the terrace of the communal pool. The pool was the huge draw for us, with ample sun loungers and a waterfall which the kids jumped through. The water isn’t heated but that didn’t bother my boys or husband. The apartment also housed a small kitchenette that enabled us to dine in two evenings of our three night stay, saving money and time. View a quick video of our apartment below – you can hear when the kids spot the kittens 🙂

Farm – Masseria Puglia, Trulli Farm stay with Pool

Meet the animals on a masseria in Puglia

Masseria Pentima Vetrana is more of a homestead than a sprawling farm. We’re talking a few pigs, ample chickens, cats and dogs. A litter of kittens delighted my children who played with them from sun up to sun down. The setting is rural and peaceful. The gardens feel like a little oasis, featuring rudimentary swings and play equipment for little ones. The property also produces its own wine and olive oil. It’s tranquil but there’s wifi!

Trulli – Masseria Puglia, Trulli Farm stay with Pool

Climbing onto the roof of the trulli

As well as staying in the trulli, it’s possible to even walk on top of them. A unique experience that I wasn’t expecting. A bit of rooftop exploration was way more relaxing than I expected.

Food & Drink – Masseria Puglia, Trulli Farm stay with Pool

A delightful breakfast served by a generous waiter, who had a Mrs Doyle approach to dishing out local specialities such as baked goods like pasticciotti with chocolate or pistachio fillings, mozzarella, cured meats, coffee, every Nutella concoction you can conjure up, as well as ample fruit, yogurt and juices. The accommodation rate was good especially if you consider it includes breakfast.

The one night we dined out we headed from one rural dot in the landscape to Arboris Belli, another dot in the landscape. Here we dined on pork, sliced beef and aubergine dishes, finishing with fruit de bosca gelato and a fantastic cheesecake. The vibe was homely, with home cooked meals. A quaint and delicious venue that I’d certainly recommend.

Location – Masseria Puglia, Trulli Farm stay with Pool

The location is a winner. The masseria is only 2 miles away from the stunning trulli capital of beautiful Alberobello pictured above. With vast car parks just as you enter town, we arrived at 10am and parked up with ease. Wandering among the old streets peppered with trulli is an absolute delight. You could spend an hour or all day exploring, alternatively book a tour so you’re taken to all the best spots.

We sometimes struggled picking up supplies in Italy, but the Conad supermarket just outside Alberobello made food shopping just like home. It really made me feel more in control of our diet and time.

Other towns nearby to explore near the Messeria include Fasano, gorgeous Monopoli (15 miles away), and Pentima Vetrana is a 25 min drive away. Alternatively hit the beach or explore the caves at Castellana Grotte. We also recommend booking a boat trip to the Polignano Caves. Further afield, Bari is 1 hr 10 mins away, and Lecce is a 1 hr 25 minute drive.

Other activities on offer include cookery and food tours, so you can be as organised or as independent as you wish.

We landed in Italy and booked things spontaneously as we progressed on our ten day road trip. It was so easy to book Masseria Pentima Vetrana, so check prices and availability here. It was bliss, and we hope to return. I just felt strangely at home here and our children were so happy, so I’d thoroughly recommend it.

Getting There

We flew into Bari airport direct from Edinburgh and hired a car. Our road trip covered Bari, Monopoli, Lecce, Mora Mora and Alberobello.
