When we visited Dumfries & Galloway we did lots of FUN things for kids, such as Peter Pan’s Moat Brae, the Cocoa Bean Company and Cream o’ Galloway, which are both highly recommended. But as National Trust for Scotland members we also dipped into Threave Garden in Castle Douglas for a more grown up chill out.

From a kid’s perspective Threave Garden offers a playground and some Belted Galloway cow statues to play cowboy on.

The kids stretched their legs, running round a vast garden. There were sculptures, water features and rockeries to navigate.

The Walled Garden and its glasshouse contained  a pond of goldfish. We also learned about local bats.

We sheltered from the rain under a giant mushroom. And in the Garden of Contemplation the kids contemplated being quiet for 0.5 seconds, but then abandoned the idea.

Stately Home

There’s also a country house in the middle of the gardens that’s possible to tour. It was closed when we visited but click here for more info.

Food & Drink

A modern onsite café dishes up healthy, informal dishes, with many ingredients fresh from the Walled Garden. The kids chose animal lunch boxes filled with goodies. The favourite dish was a baked potato with haggis and peppercorn sauce.

End the visit by purchasing a few herbs or flowers for home in the Plant Centre.

The Lowdown

In terms of practicalities, expect high NTS standards. There’s lot of parking, clean toilets and the garden is accessible for sturdy buggies. Check out prices for non-members here.
