The Flower Field – Things to do in Laurencekirk
We’ve all heard of pick-your-own fruit but have you tried pick-your-own flowers? This small field, well sign-posted and just off the A90 starts the year with daffodils, tulips, iris and alliums, followed by sunflowers, gladioli and dahlia. A display board advises visitors when and how to pick each flower, and costs range from 40p-£1.00 per stem. Cutting implements are provided but feel free to bring your own.
Farming in the Field Centre – Things to do in Laurencekirk
Farming in the Field Education Centre introduces children to farming and growing their own food. The centre is run by the lovely Marie Thomson, a farmer’s daughter who’s worked in the care profession. She’s great with kids and turned my sulking seven year old into a keen farm hand in under five minutes. The kids had fun meeting the pet Kunekune pigs, Pinky and Dotty, but they had to learn about them too. They checked the pigs’ gait, their skin and hair, and learnt more about how pigs live. We also learned that a ‘pig sty’ is neater than the boys’ bedroom.
The next stop was taking Marie’s rescue donkeys, Keiran and Johnny through a simple obstacle course. Youngsters are allocated jobs throughout their session, from filling troughs and watering plants to pushing wheelbarrows.
Also look out for events such as the Summer 2022 Farm Treasure Hunts, running from 4 July to 19 August.
Grassic Gibbon Centre – Things to do in Laurencekirk
After all that hard work make a stop at the Grassic Gibbon Centre café, which also has an outdoor playground. If you dine in the café you get free entry into the exhibition area (usually £2.75 for adults), which tells the story of North East writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon. His most famous work is Sunset Song, part of the Scots Quair, and his literature captures the beauty and toughness of agricultural life in the early twentieth century through the voice of heroine Chris Guthrie. The exhibition is aimed primarily at adults, featuring lots of information boards, but the 15-minute documentary sums up the author’s life well. You don’t to enter the exhibition to visit the nice wee cafe and playground.
Balmakewan Farm Shop – Things to do in Laurencekirk
Another pit stop to consider is Balmakewan Farm Shop. See the herd of deer in the field on your approach, then grab a fly cup, breakfast or lunch in the café. And pick up fresh local produce, from cheeses to pies.
Walks, Hikes & Cycles
Walks to research include Denlethen Forest Walk, or walking to the top of the Hill of Garvock to reach the Tower of Johnston. The Cairn O Mount is also an option for cyclists.
Seascapes
Laurencekirk is only a fifteen minute drive from the sea. So if you do fancy a change of scene then nip to the picturesque harbour town of Johnshaven, or the sweeping golden sands of St Cyrus.
Nearby Stonehaven
And don’t forget nearby Stonehaven. Excellent beach, stunning coastal walk to the dramatic ruined castle of Dunnottar, ice cream parlours, outdoor swimming pool, caravan park and more.
