Things to do in Crail, in the East Neuk of Fife
Things to do in Crail – This achingly attractive Fife coastal village makes for a relaxing weekend break for all ages. Indulge in simple pleasures and make the most of this scenic location.
Crail Harbour
The historic harbour is a relaxed spot. A small sandy beach with a toy library encourages kids to play, or watch the little boats bobbing with the safety of the old harbour walls. Brodie’s Grannie’s ice cream sells sweet treats, and a seasonal Lobster Shack serves up fresh crab and lobster.
Crail Gallery & Tearoom
The road down to the harbour is the stunning Shoregate. Here you’ll find an inimitable spot, the Crail Gallery & Tearoom. While the Crail-inspired artworks by owner and artist DS Mackie make gorgeous mementos, and the hot smoked salmon from the East Neuk Kilnhouse is so flavoursome, the café’s outdoor terrace is stunning. With views over the water to the Isle of May, the outdoor seating area is unmissable.
Roome Bay
At the other end of the village (about 10 mins walk) is the sweeping Roome Bay. The walk between the two locations is recommended, as you’ll pass the old Castle Wall, the site of the former King’s Mill and an old sun dial. With every step, simply keep the sea on your right-hand-side and appreciate the views. Roome Bay itself is a sandy destination with a large playground for little ones.
Crail Doocot
Looking down onto Roome Bay is Crail’s doocot. It once housed hundreds of birds across 700 nesting boxes. Restored by the Crail Preservation Society, it’s free to visit, with really informative info boards full of quirky, unexpected facts. Simply step inside this dark space and learn something new.
Crail Pottery
Crail Pottery looks like a wee cottage, but it’s pretty expansive inside. The garden area is jam-packed with outdoor ceramics – pot plant holders and ornaments. Step inside to see the potters at work on the ground floor studio, then ascend to the showroom that’s full of delightful creations. As several potters work here there’s a real mix of styles and themes, from little houses (inspired by the architecture of Crail) to tartan mugs, or classic ware. The traditional salt pigs were my favourite.
Crail Museum & Heritage Centre
For a free slice of history and heritage, step inside Crail Museum & Heritage Centre to learn about town criers, the Dutch influence in Crail, the arrival of the railway and the daredevil activities at nearby HMS Jackdaw from WW2 onwards.
Next to the museum, look out for the Mercat Cross, and the Tollbooth with the haddock on top!
Attractive Architecture & Beautiful Streets
The crow-stepped gable houses (a Dutch influence, thanks to trading links) make cute, quaint and photogenic streets. Most of Crail is a conservation area, but favourites of mine include Rose Wynd and Shoregate pictured. On a commercial note, the High Street hosts an array of gift shops, cafe and everyday stores, but the vast majority are independent.
Dine at The Shoregate
If you’re seeking quality food, non-pretentious, stylish surroundings, at reasonable prices I thoroughly recommend The Shoregate restaurant with rooms. I was very satisfied with the venison loin with haunch bridie and Savoy cabbage, followed by a sticky maple tart with Pink Lady apples and spiced pecans. I loved the fact that the majority of the ingredients could have been dished up a century ago, and the chef worked wonders with them.
Fife Coastal Path
Follow the coast on the Fife Coastal Route. Head east towards Kingsbarns and Cambo, or head west to Anstruther. The latter route is easier, as it’s non-tidal.
Out of Town – Kingsbarns Distillery
For gin and whisky distilling take a tour of Kingsbarns Distillery, only five minutes from Crail. A tasting with drivers’ packs is included too.
Where to Stay
A restaurant with rooms, The Shoregate leads with its food, but upstairs discover four stylish bedrooms, including one suite/family room. The duck confit breakfast was something special. Check out prices and availability here.
There are SO many holiday homes, too many, to rent. It feels like every second property is a ‘buy to holiday let’, so no shortage there.
