Things to do in Islamorada in the Florida Keys – We flew into Miami with our kids, spent one night in Key Largo, before hitting the road for Islamorada, where several of the bucket-list activities of any Keys trip can be found. And don’t worry, you barely have to prebook any of it!

Rain Barrel Village – Things to do in Islamorada
FREE You know you’re on a Florida Keys road trip when you see Betsy the Lobster. This fibreglass creation by sculptor Richard Blaze was started back in the 1980. At 30 foot high, the towering Florida Spiny Lobster has been at home at the Rain Barrel Village since 2009.
Rain Barrel Artisan Village offers an array of little gift shops, arts and crafts, plus food and drink – our kids tried their first Boba Tea and raved about it. A great place to stretch the legs and pick up mementoes.
Midway Cafe – Things to do in Islamorada
Situated in the middle of your journey is the colourful Midway Cafe. The staff here serve a host of savouries but we stopped for coffee and a slice of Key Lime Pie, which has a generous meringue and is served at the perfect cool temperature. Midway Cafe is popular, with queues, but they move fast. Expect free easy parking and ample outdoor seating in both the shade and the sun.
Feed the Tarpon at Robbie’s – Things to do in Islamorada
UNMISSABLE Robbie’s is SO much fun. Just turn up, admission to the pier is €2.50 per person, buy a bucket or two of fish, $5 for around 6 fish (which is ample), then terrify yourself by leaning over the netting to feed the absolutely massive tarpon. The kids jumped out of their skin, I shrieked like a banshee, and we had a hoot.
There are pelicans everywhere, that you can practically touch, they have no fear. Robbies also serves food at Hungry Tarpon Restaurant. Browse the shops for gifts and clothing, hit the bar for their signature Trailer Trash Bloody Mary, and watersports, fishing trips and an array of activities are available too. What an amazing stop. [Free easy parking. Visiting Robbie’s is free, you only pay to access the pier.]
Breweries – Things to do in Islamorada
Since Mr Husband was driving, we didn’t stop at the Florida Keys Brewery or the Islamorada Beer Company, but look them up if you’re a beer fan.
Watersports & Beaches
Snorkelling at Alligator Reef, sandbar tours, mangrove kayaking trips, it’s all possible. For a day onshore, it’s also possible to visit Anne’s Beach.
History of Diving Museum – Things to do in Islamorada
A rainy day activity is dropping by the History of Diving Museum, my dad and husband would love all the artefacts, equipment (a global collection of diving helmets) and stories. Discover prices here.
Where to Stay
Islamorada offers a range of quality accommodation, but for transparency, we stayed in fantastic budget accommodation in Key Largo for one night (complete with pool and private beach), and a serene coastal resort in Marathon for 3 nights, before carrying on to Key West.
Day Trips
Day Trips to Marathon, Bahai Honda National Park and Key West are just a short drive away.
