Accommodation in Scone – Scone is the former capital of Scotland so rich in history and heritage. We found one particular hotel offering that works for families, couples and golfers alike. Four-star Murrayshall Hotel is set in 365 acres of its own land, with an 17 hole golf course on the doorstep. The hotel offers 40 rooms and suites. The traditional country house dates back to 1664: here visitors discover sophisticated bedrooms, ideal for couples, with a luxury boutique feel.

A few metres from the main house are new suites, including family suites, with their own living room and kitchenette, offering more spacious accommodation for small groups or families.

We were in a family suite, which is quite simply done but wonderfully spacious. There was a master bedroom with ensuite, a living area (featuring sofa beds for little ones) with a dining area, small kitchenette with fridge. And there’s a second toilet. It felt indulgent having so much room at our disposal.

Restaurant – Accommodation in Scone: Murrayshall

Athough the Lynedoch Brasserie is located in the heart of the country house, it’s got a smart, modern feel with cool hints of Scotland in the decor. A good menu too. I tried a leek and blue cheese bridie to start, followed by a confit of celeriac and artichoke hearts. But there are plenty of meat dishes too, such as braised beef cheek or Gressingham duck. Afternoon tea and Sunday Lunch are also available. Golfers can opt to eat in the Stutts club house. Alternatively take your dining experience outside dining al fresco in the courtyard.

Bar and Library – Accommodation in Scone: Murrayshall

The bar features a grand piano, with lots of snug seating areas, including a rich blue velvet sofa in front of the open fire. Alternatively take any digestifs or aperitifs through to the library. Despite its luxury, Murrayshall does have that comfortable feeling where you’re happy to wander from public room to public room. Very relaxing.

Location

The Perthshire views are fantastic, and the golf course is naturally a draw. On the estate there are a few clearly marked trails, including one up Murrayshall Hill to the memorial commemorating Murrayshall family member, Lord Lynedoch, an enigmatic war hero. The biggest local draw, just a few minute’s drive from Murrayshall, must be Scone Palace, former home of the Stone of Destiny. The grounds and gardens are beautiful to visit in their right. An adult ticket cost £10 at time of writing. They feature a Kitchen Garden, very cool star shaped maze, playground and acres of grounds to run around and explore. A café provides refreshment, and the Food Shop is stocked full of gifts and treats.

To access the castle itself, book a guided tour (a ticket covering both castle tour and gardens/grounds is currently £20 per adult). It’s a beautifully grand building with rich furnishings. Hear tales of Queen Victoria’s visit (and how she hogged the warmest seat next to the fire), the Earl’s friendship with Marie Antoinette and gaze at the unusual portrait of Dido and Belle. Personally, I’d only recommend the tour for older children as it isn’t really aimed at youngsters.

Any green-fingered visitors may wish to stop by Scone’s memorial to David Douglas, plant hunter and explorer. If you haven’t heard of him, then chances are you have heard of a Douglas Fir.
